Introduction
Deepak Chopra is an Indian medical doctor and writer. He has written extensively on spirituality and diverse topics in mind-body medicine. Chopra says that he has been influenced by the teachings of Vedanta and the Bhagavad Gita, as well as by Jiddu Krishnamurti, and by the field of quantum physics.[1]
Teachings
- Advocates alternative health practices such as Ayurveda, and Yoga.
- Uses current scientific jargon along with mysticism to promote the "mind over matter" philosophy.
- Stresses on love, openness and other spiritual virtues.
Influence and Followers
His influence is mostly amongst the educated classes (all his books have been published in English), and the rich (his workshops and retreats are said to be quite expensive). He is also said to have many Hollywood celebrities among his followers. (Reference needed)
Controversies and Criticism
- Indulges in what many say is Quantum Quackery. In 1998, Chopra was awarded the satirical Ig Nobel Prize in physics for "his unique interpretation of quantum physics as it applies to life, liberty, and the pursuit of economic happiness.[2]
- Published an article in Journal of the American Medical Association which was controversial due to a conflict of interest.[3]
- He received widespread condemnation for a marketing message for his products after 9/11 to heal the affected people.[4]
- He has been involved in various lawsuits and controversies, including one concerning sexual harassment.[5]
- His retreats are extremely expensive.[citation needed]
- Used his clout and influence to launch his son's literary career.[6]
